ABOUT
MAHINDRA SHINDE,
YOUR GUIDE TO MUMBAI!
Mahindra speaks fuent English, Hindi, Gujarati, Parsi and Marathi, and can swear in a dozen other dialects. At one time, he was even persuaded to invest some time in an almost conventional education, and became a founder member of the local Pavement School for runaway kids; but his attendance was intermittent, and the lure of the street drew him back time and time again. But there was always something special about Mahindra Shinde which set him apart from the other kids.

From the Streets to the Stars
At just seven years old, Mahindra Shinde ran away from home and arrived alone and penniless at Mumbai’s Gateway of India. Like thousands of other street children, he fought to survive, working as a shoe-shiner, guide, ticket tout, and more, mastering multiple languages along the way.
As he grew older, Mahindra became a key figure among Mumbai’s street kids, eventually earning the attention of the Salvation Army, who offered him a role at Red Shield House. Despite opportunities for a more conventional life—including a job at the British Council—he remained true to his roots.
A trusted fixer, guide, and production assistant, Mahindra has worked on numerous BBC projects and built a reputation for his deep knowledge of Mumbai. Whether for travelers, photographers, or filmmakers, his expertise offers a one-of-a-kind experience.
From the streets of Mumbai to the world, Mahindra’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion.
